He Let His Guard Down

He let his guard down
For the first time in his life
Head full of second thoughts
Somehow the words came out in time
She never bought his act
His sullen cool just made her laugh
But she always let him go
She always let him come back
It took so long to chip away his hardened shell
And when he was revealed seemed only she could tell
He never asked for it
It came over like a wave
From that scratchy 45
A sound like the end of days
He bounced from here to there
Always listening for that sound
Managed to find a trade
But he could not settle down
Found kindred spirits for a fleeting golden age
But he kept chasing that sound and watched the others fade
It seems absurd to sing those songs
So full of young and hopeful rage
He finds no solace on the stage
Now he’s just tired
But he can’t sleep
It helps to walk
But he no longer knows these streets
A far cry from ‘79
That was his big time
All through by ‘82
But it was still good to be alive
Is it too late now to put back that stony shell?
He needs it now but she left too big a hole to fill
He let his guard down just long enough to let go
He called her name once more

Small Victories

Savor small victories
It's all you get
You're not free yet
Did you forget your promises?
You think you might run away
But is that really what you want to be?
A fugitive, a refugee?
Still you think twice 'cus you can't go home
Once the battle has been joined
The diplomats have been sent away
And the flags are raised
You can't lay down your arms
Savor small victories
The quiet triumphs
That no one sees
'Cus you don't have to prove a thing
I know you know there's a better way
But don't let your dreams take you too far away
We need you all here today
You stood fast but they took the high ground
Now it's just a matter of time
The runners have been sent
There's no one left to come to your defense
You pay the consequence alone
But you can't lay down your arms
