At once the lights fill up the stage The drummer hesitates But sticks soon click and we're off the races Crowd in the dark stumble for their seats The spotlight finds you suddenly A few heads turn but I can't make out the faces Backstage a roadie deals a hand The headliner demands Security escorts and intrepid fan I open up my mouth to sing But I can't hear a thing Distracted by your footlight halo You make a pretty good angel At six the sound check came and went At seven, too and eight again It's doors, too late "I'm sure you guys will sound great tonight!" Changing clothes out in the van Swapping swag with the local band Who play for free Just happy to be there They've got the stopwatch out tonight Kill the banter, keep it tight So long, last song Did I mention we got shirts for sale? Crowd's gone backstage We play the empty hall It would've been a bust But she came all the way from Cincy To hear you sing that song Got everyone to sing along (Don't break the heart that needs you There's nowhere you can go but down) Pull out of T.O. in the snow We left straight after the show The Customs agent emptied out the van We pull in late No check again tonight Two fans get in a fight Up go the house lights The DJ throws up his hands Says, "Let's hear it for the warm up band!"

It’s dying Take it off the respirator Call up the undertaker Pull the plug It’s no use Trying to resuscitate it It’s a miracle it made it This far This particular volatile mixture Demands too perfect a temperature You could only keep it cool so long So long So long Pull the plug Now’s the time to steel your resolve Ask yourself what would it solve To bring it back, go ahead Pull the plug I know that you’ll thank me later Do yourself and everyone a favor Pull the plug Do it now But you never knew when to quit, did you? Always have to be the one to fix it But there’s really nothing anyone can do Except you You can pull the plug

Veteran producer/songwriter/guitarist Jay Sherman-Godfrey released his solo debut EP "Twoscore" in 2006. He produced and played on two acclaimed CDs for Laura Cantrell, who joins him here on Pull The Plug, and has recorded and performed with They Might Be Giants, Tandy, Amy Rigby, Michael Shelley, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, and Mojo Nixon, among many others. In the early 1980s, he co-founded the seminal NYC country-rock band World Famous Blue Jays, and with the band’s leader, Jeremy Tepper, helped establish and run Diesel Only Records. He returns to Diesel Only’s 7” single heritage with this new series of virtual 45s, each with custom label and sleeve artwork.

Since 1996, Able Mobile Recording Lab has been Sherman-Godfrey’s ad hoc studio, capturing human, wood, wire and tube powered performances in lofts, bedrooms, kitchens, gymnasiums, barns -- anywhere with a plug, like-minded musicians, and favorable ambiance. In 2008, Able Mobile found a semi-permanent home in Greenpoint Brooklyn, sharing space with Joe McGinty’s Carousel Vintage Keyboard Studio.
